Grade-Level Technology Objectives
Grade Kindergarten:
By the end of Kindergarten, students recognize the major hardware components in a computer system (e.g., computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard), and understand their functions.
Students recognize symbols and icons used to identify common hardware and software functions within prepared materials (e.g., the arrow symbol as the icon for proceeding to the next page of a curriculum-related software, underline or colored text to represent a link.
Students will know how to use the keyboard to type letters and numbers and know how to use special key functions (e.g., delete, shift, arrow keys, space-bar).
Students will identify the basic care of the computer, mouse, and keyboard by carefully using components.
Students will begin to practice typing/keyboarding skills using online, age-appropriate typing games.
Students will be engaged in early reading websites such as http://www.starfall.com where they will have the opportunity to learn basic mouse and keyboarding while listening to interactive stories and learning games that will enhance their literacy skills. The use of Microsoft’s Paint program will also be used to provide practice with mouse movement and navigation.
Grade One:
By the end of grade one, students will be able to name the main parts of a computer system, (e.g., CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, disk drive, etc.) and identify their functions.
Students know how to start up the computer, locate an application, choose an icon to select, open, save, print, and close files; and shut down the computer and monitor properly.
Student recognize symbols and icons commonly used in curriculum related software to identify options to print, save, move to next page, etc.
Students discuss how to properly take care of computer equipment. Students will begin to practice typing/keyboarding skills using online, age-appropriate typing games.
Students will be engaged in curriculum-related websites where they will have the opportunity to use the computer to enhance especially, literacy and mathematics skills as well as, be exposed to holiday and seasonal activities.
Grade Two:
By the end of second grade, students are able to describe how to use basic input devices (e.g. keyboard, mouse), output device (e.g. printer).
Students identify functions represented by symbols or icons found in software applications (e.g. a printer icon, bold, or underline symbols).
Students will know how to access the Internet and locate a curriculum-related website.
Students will gain keyboarding practice by using online typing lessons, as well as age- appropriate typing games. In addition students will use Microsoft Word to type information they research in class.
Students will be engaged in curriculum-related websites where they will have the opportunity to use the computer to enhance especially, literacy and mathematics skills as well as, be exposed to holiday and seasonal activities.
Grade Three:
By the end of grade three, students are able to access various curriculum-related websites and are able to report information in Microsoft Word. In addition, students are able to open and work between two or more applications.
Students will understand and use the various toolbar symbols and icons in Microsoft Word in
publishing their work (e.g., bold, underline, center, copy, paste, indent, font size, spell-check, print, etc.)
Students will know how to insert a picture into their documents and reformat the picture’s size or placement.
Students will be engaged in curriculum-related websites where they will have the opportunity to use the computer to enhance especially, literacy and mathematics skills as well as, be exposed to holiday and seasonal activities.
Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word.
Grade Four:
By the end of grade four, students associate symbols, icons, and words and use menu options in application programs such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, to develop text and graphics in reporting or summarizing information.
Students are able to open, print, and save files to various local computer and network drives.
Students will discuss issues related to Internet safety, privacy, and cyber-bullying.
Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word. In addition, students will complete timed typing exercises to help build speed and accuracy.
Students will be engaged in researching information at a teacher-directed website and summarizing their learning in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. In addition, students will access
curriculum-related websites that enable them to practice literacy or mathematics skills, or participate in seasonal and holiday activities.
Grade Five:
By the end of grade five, students are able to identify and apply various features to their documents and presentations.
Students are encouraged to use the Internet to research and evaluate information, answer essential questions and report their learning. In addition, students research information at
multiple websites and are encouraged to quote sources.
Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word. In addition, students will complete timed typing exercises to help build speed and accuracy.
Students will be engaged in using technology to enhance classroom learning and will be involved in curriculum-related projects and assignments, as directed by their middle school teachers.
Grade Six:
By the end of grade six, students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
Students know how to use word processing to type, proofread, and edit a document. Students know how to use various features such as adding colors, backgrounds, and animation scheme in creating a PowerPoint slide-show. Students know how to research information efficiently using Internet Explorer.
Students will discuss issues related to Internet safety, privacy, and cyber-bullying. Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word. In addition, students will complete timed typing exercises to help build speed and accuracy.
Students know how to use devices such as flash drives and network drives to save their work and manage their files.
Students will discuss issues related to Internet safety, privacy, and cyber-bullying. Students will be engaged in using technology to enhance classroom learning and will be involved
in curriculum-related projects and assignments, as directed by their middle school teachers.
Grade Seven:
By the end of grade seven, students are proficient in the use of technology. use the Microsoft Office suite of software efficiently and effectively. Students will identify different software applications and know which types can be used most effectively for different types of data. (e.g. tables in Word, Bar Graphs in Excel, pictures and sound in PowerPoint).
Students are able to evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, and bias of electronic iformation sources or websites. Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word. In addition, students will complete timed typing exercises to help build speed and accuracy.
Students will discuss issues related to Internet safety, privacy, and cyber-bullying.

Grade Eight:
By the end of grade eight, students are proficient in the use of technology, as well as efficiently and effectively use Microsoft Office.
Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software. Students identify a broad range of issues related to use and misuse of information and communication technology resources (e.g. privacy, safety, security, plagiarism, etc.). Students reflect on technology past and present and its impact on the future of schools and the
workforce.
Students will practice typing using online typing lessons and by typing for real purposed in Microsoft Word. In addition, students will complete timed typing exercises to help build speed and accuracy.
Students will be engaged in using technology, especially to enhance classroom learning and will be involved in curriculum-related projects and assignments, as directed by their middle school teachers.
Grade 8 th students will also be involved in the creation of the school yearbook.
Students use computer and digital technology to create yearbook pages summarizing their memories. Students will create documents, use digital cameras, print and scan photos and work as a team to coordinate photography of special events around school, and publish their memories.
